Automotive

Magnesium is used in gearbox housings, steering columns, driver air bag housings, steering wheels, seat frames, and fuel tank covers. Major users include Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Jaguar, Fiat, and Kia. The majority of magnesium parts are produced through high pressure die casting.

Aluminum Alloying

Magnesium increases the strength, hardness, and castability of aluminum. The 5xxx series aluminum alloys gain strength through solid solution strengthening with magnesium. The 6xxx series use magnesium and silicon to form magnesium-silicide, providing heat-treatability. Common 6xxx applications include handrails, drive shafts, automotive frame sections, and bicycle frames.

Aerospace

Magnesium is found in thrust reversers for the Boeing 737, 747, 757, and 767, as well as jet engine fan frames and helicopter transmission casings. The aerospace industry is widely seen as the next major growth segment for the magnesium market.
